red queen effect?

could someone plz explain to me the red queen effect…i couldnt understand it from wikipedia…and why is it called red queen effect?

thanks

The red queen principle says that in general, there are always competitions in nature, and that each side will do its level best to survive.

One example is a predator/prey relationship: The rabbit must be fast to escape the fox. So faster rabbits live longer and have more babies, who will also probably be fast. Foxes who are fast enough to catch the faster rabbits will not starve, but will live long enough to have lots of (fast) babies of their own.

In the end, though, you still have foxes who can catch rabbits. There has been no actual change in how well the critters do to reproduce.

It’s also called an “arms race” – the USA and USSR’s cold war was like this. Each side was spending all of this time and money to build up a bunch of nuclear weapons to scare the other from attacking. We were at peace before the Cold War started, and we were at peace after the cold war ended – and all that we got out of it was a bunch of rusty bombs and wasted money.

Anyway, it’s called the Red Queen effect because in “Through the Looking Glass,” Alice (while in wonderland) has to run a race while staying in the same place. She puts out all this energy and gets nothing in return – just like the rabbits and foxes.
