Retraining an x-harness racing Standardbred for English riding?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

So this week, I began free leasing my friend’s x harness racing standardbred. He is 9 years old, and very green broke.

He seems to “pace” instead of trot because of the training from the tracks.

Is it possible to retrain him to “trot” instead of ‘pace”?

how should I go about breaking his pace habit?

thanks!

I have ridden a lot of Standardbreds. To train them that you want them to trot instead of pace when you ask him to trot and he paces, pull him back and firmly say “no” then ask him to trot again, if he paces repeat. He will get agitated and confused but eventually he should try a trot (he CAN do this) and when he does, do not stop him, but keep him moving forward and praise him a lot with a pat and all… If he starts pacing again pull him back to a halt and say “no” and start again. If he keeps trotting for a while ask him to walk and later ask him to trot again. Do this each time you ride him until he learns that you want him to trot instead of pace. It is a long and boring and often frustrating process depending on the horse but it seems to pay off!
