Causes Pink Eye

What causes cats to get pink eye?

We just adpoted a 5 year old cat, yesterday his eye started swelling, and I took him to the vet today and they said he had pink eye, and I forgot to ask.
1- how did he come down with it
2- is it transferable to my kids

Pink eye is a bacterial infection that is not severe but it is contagious. Cats are very genetically similar to humans, meaning they are susceptible to the same types of bacteria. Since you adopted him, he was probably in contact with some type of bacteria which gave him pink eye. There really is no treatment for it other than eye drops, which aren’t necessary. It will go away on it’s own, but if it doesn’t within a week, talk to your vet again.

As for you children coming in contact with the bacteria, this is a very likely possibility. Just make sure they wash their hands very well after handling the cat, and try to have them avoid rubbing their eyes, or directly touching the cat’s face. This is about all you can do. Definitely keep an eye on your cat, and if things worsen, make sure you see a vet immediately. Good luck, and hopefully it’ll get better! icon smile Causes Pink Eye
